Overview
Run jointly by ICGEB Cape Town and South Africa's Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, this fellowship funds a three-year PhD for South African women researchers in biotechnology-related fields such as infectious disease, bioinformatics, plant systems biology and virology. It includes tuition, a stipend, and mobility support to ICGEB's Italy and India components. Applications are submitted directly by email with a project proposal and supervisor endorsement, and the PhD is expected to start in early 2027.
Eligibility
Female applicants who are South African citizens or permanent residents with a valid ID, holding or about to complete an MSc degree; preference given to Black and disabled applicants; the research project must align with ICGEB Cape Town's priority areas (Infectious Diseases, Non-Communicable Diseases, Bioinformatics, Plant Systems Biology, Virology); a letter of endorsement from an ICGEB Cape Town Group Leader is mandatory.

Funding & Benefits
Three-year PhD award (with mobility component) covering full tuition at the University of Cape Town, a monthly stipend, and mobility opportunities for research stays at ICGEB centres in Italy and India.
