Overview

OIST runs an English-language, interdisciplinary 5-year PhD starting with lab rotations, with strong groups in molecular, cell, developmental and neurobiology as well as marine science. About 60 students are admitted each year. Applications for 2027 entry are open from 31 July to 15 November 2026 (23:59 JST), with entry possible in May 2027, September 2027 or January 2028.

Eligibility

Bachelor's, master's or equivalent degree completed before enrolment (final-year students may apply). No written entrance exam; shortlisted candidates attend an online Admissions Workshop (18 Jan–7 Feb 2027).
