Overview

Wellcome's flagship funding scheme for early-career researchers in health and life sciences, providing salary and up to £400,000 in research costs over roughly five years. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis with no fixed deadline.

Eligibility

Researchers who have completed a PhD (or equivalent, min. 4 years research experience) with up to 3 years' postdoctoral experience, contributing at least 80% research time. From 29 October 2026, eligible LMICs narrow to Africa, South Asia and Southeast Asia (Bangladesh qualifies as South Asia).

Nationality: Researchers based at eligible institutions in UK, Ireland, or LMICs in Africa/South Asia/Southeast Asia (post 29 Oct 2026)

Funding & Benefits

Covers researcher's salary plus up to £400,000 for research expenses, with additional funding available for overheads and overseas allowances; typical award duration is 5 years.
